Solution Architect (External Consultant) Role Overview We are seeking an experienced Solution Architect to support ongoing digital and cloud-driven initiatives. The consultant will play a central role in designing modern, scalable, and secure solutions on Microsoft Azure, ensuring strong architectural governance, high-quality integrations, and close alignment with business stakeholders. The role requires a senior architect with strong technical depth, excellent communication skills, and the ability to translate business needs into robust architectural designs. The consultant must be comfortable working in a fast-moving enterprise environment and collaborating across IT, business, and vendor teams. Key Responsibilities Solution Architecture — Design end-to-end solution architectures across Azure-based platforms and enterprise systems. Microsoft Azure — Develop cloud architectures leveraging Azure services, security models, integration patterns, and best practices. Integration Architecture — Define and oversee integrations across internal systems, external partners, and cloud services. Diagramming & Documentation — Produce clear architectural diagrams, models, and documentation for technical and business audiences. Product Evaluation — Assess technologies, platforms, and tools together with the business to ensure optimal fit and long-term value. Stakeholder Collaboration — Work closely with business owners, IT teams, and leadership to ensure architectural alignment and shared understanding. Technical Guidance — Provide direction to development teams and vendors, ensuring solutions follow architectural standards. Quality & Compliance — Ensure solutions meet security, performance, and compliance requirements. Roadmapping — Contribute to architectural roadmaps and support strategic decision-making. Required Skills & Experience Strong experience as Solution Architect in enterprise environments. Deep hands-on expertise with Microsoft Azure (compute, storage, networking, security, integration services). Solid experience with integration architecture, APIs, messaging, event-driven patterns. Strong capabilities in diagramming, modelling, and architectural documentation. Experience conducting product evaluations with business stakeholders. Ability to communicate clearly with both technical and non-technical audiences. Experience working with cross-functional teams and external vendors. Job Description • Responsible for creating and constantly refining the solution architecture for commercial and home-built digital solutions in strong collaboration with other software & data architects, and software engineers. • Responsible for evaluating commercial software solutions and assessing the required effort to integrate it with existing digital solutions to enable a seamless experience for R&D scientists. Strategic Initiatives: • Contributor to strategic initiative to modernize and evolve the research application landscape. • Ensure alignment and high engagement with organizational strategies. Must have skills: • Demonstrated subject matter expertise in software architecture, cloud-native solutions, and pharmaceutical research IT. • Broad expertise ranging from research data management to scientific digital solutions. • Knowledge of applications and architectures that enable highly automated, high throughput screening environments. • Extensive technical knowledge and experience of at least one object-oriented coding language (.NET / C# and Python preferred). • Hands-on experience with microservices, event-driven architectures (Apache Kafka / event streaming), containerization, and infrastructure-as-code (Terraform, Bicep). • Proven track record in applied AI/ML architecture. • Solid knowledge of domain-driven architecture and solution design. • Relevant knowledge and experience of the FAIR principles.
